Please join us for a lunch with Recology to learn about the San Francisco’s garbage by Green Rail to Ostrom Road project. San Francisco residents and businesses are taking many steps to increase recycling and composting. And The City and Recology, which provides recycling, compost, and garbage collection services throughout San Francisco, continue to actively promote source reduction, reuse, and recycling.
Together these efforts are producing positive results. Recycling is up, composting is up, and San Francisco is sending less material to landfill disposal. But until the goal of zero waste is reached, some material will still need to be sent to landfill.
A panel of city officials from San Francisco and Oakland chose Recology Ostrom Road Landfill to receive garbage from San Francisco after the city’s current landfill agreement ends in 2015. Officials say the plan to ship San Francisco’s garbage by Green Rail to Ostrom Road is the most cost-effective and environmental option for transporting waste. Rail haul is at least three times more efficient than trucking, takes trucks off the road, and cuts fuel consumption and air emissions.
